This article should be updated. Directory numbers are assigned by EMT and not chosen by the user. Directory numbers can be 7 digits if there are more than 99 devices of a type. The first two digits can be set by using the 'Set System ID' function. In an AB system database the A system is assigned odd numbers and B system is assigned even numbers.
